View from the Stoep: Tracking the Evolution of Local Hosting in South Africa and Beyond

Session description:

Where do different countries host their most popular content, and what factors drive the development of a locally hosted content market? In addition to driving ccTLD growth, the growth of a local content hosting industry improves consumer experience by making content faster, cheaper, and more accessible. In this talk, we’ll combine DNS data, BGP routing, and IP geolocation to assess content placement for South Africa and beyond. We’ll compare the Internet economies of global countries that are net importers (with nearly all popular content brought in from overseas) with countries that balance local content with foreign imports.
