Overcoming Hurdles to IPv6 Deployment in Southern Africa

Session description:

AFRINIC recently completed a survey designed to establish the key challenges to IPv6 deployment in Africa. The purpose of this session are as follows:
Confirm with Southern African network engineers involved in or planning deployments if the results of the survey are consistent with their reality
Get deeper insight into the challenges specific to Southern Africa
Brainstorm and prototype possible solutions that both operators and AFRINIC can implement to drive IPv6 adoption
Explore feasibility of formation of South African IPv6 Task Force

The aim of this session is to build a better understanding of the challenges faced by network operators, engineers and managers in deploying IPv6 in their respective organisations. We will start by providing a view of the state of IPv6 adoption and usage in Africa by different Internet stakeholders, primarily, service providers, content providers, and end-users. We will also present results of a preliminary survey on the main challenges faced by different stakeholders in different types of networks. We will build on the preliminary survey results to learn about operators’ obstacles and plans regarding implementation of IPv6, and also gain further insight into why IPv6 adoption is slow in the region. Ultimately, this exercise will provide basis for precise points of intervention by AfriNIC.
