This will form the basis of a metro area network supporting the municipality’s telecommunications needs, as well as making available optic fibre infrastructure for use by third-party telecommunication service providers.

Prior to establishing the City’s Telecommunication department in 2006, Mr van Wyk coordinated the City’s migration to a standard distributed computing environment, involving over 12,000 desktop PCs. He was the IT director for the City of Bellville from 1986, and fulfilled the same role for the City of Tygerberg from 1997, which was amalgamated into the Cape Town Unicity in 2000. Between 1996 and 2000 he chaired the Western Cape Computer Advisory Committee.

Mr van Wyk started his career as a programmer at Caltex in 1979, and whilst at Bellville co-developed the first local government online management information system. More recently he was Cape Town’s ICT co-ordinator for the FIFA 2010 World Cup.

The first phase of Cape Town’s innovative telecoms network is scheduled to go live in December this year.
